Deep Dive: Implementing Dinosaur Feathers and Fur in UE5 — From Groom to Real-Time Rendering Optimization

Category:3D Modeling Technology · Reading time:11 minutes

As paleontological research advances, more dinosaurs are confirmed to have been covered in feathers or proto-hair. UE5's Groom system provides robust support for creating high-quality dinosaur fur. This tutorial details the complete pipeline from creating Groom assets in Houdini to real-time rendering in Unreal Engine 5. Start by using Guide Curves in Houdini to define hair growth direction and density distribution, paying close attention to variations in length and thickness across different body regions. After exporting in Alembic format and importing into UE5, create a Groom Component and bind it to the dinosaur skeleton. For materials, use the Hair BSDF model with Strand Data to achieve anisotropic highlights and transmission effects. For large areas of feather coverage, employ a Cards + Groom hybrid approach: render geometric cards at a distance and switch to true Groom up close, with seamless transitions managed via the LOD system. Performance optimization is critical. We recommend using Pixel Depth Offset to prevent hair clipping and enabling Visibility Culling to reduce computation overhead for invisible strands. While Nanite does not directly support Groom, it works seamlessly alongside Nanite meshes for the dinosaur body. Finally, adjust anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion using Post Process Volume to balance visual fidelity with performance.
