Pterosaur flight animation is one of the most challenging tasks in CG dinosaur production. This tutorial provides a systematic guide to creating pterosaur flight animations in Maya. First, understand the aerodynamics: large wing membranes generate lift, powerful chest muscles drive the flapping motion, and the long neck with head crest acts as a rudder. The flight cycle consists of two phases: downstroke (generating lift and thrust) and upstroke (reducing drag and resetting position). During the downstroke, the wing fingers extend fully, the membrane tenses, the shoulders drop, and the body lifts slightly. In the upstroke, the wings partially fold to minimize wind resistance, while the body sinks slightly. Key to realistic motion is the flexible deformation of the wings: the membrane bulges upward due to aerodynamic forces during the downstroke and sags loosely during the upstroke. This delayed deformation gives the flight an organic, lifelike quality. Use Lattice Deformer or Blend Shape to control overall membrane deformation, and Wire Tool for local creases. Maintain a stable head orientation throughout flight; the neck absorbs body vibrations from turbulence. Takeoff and landing are the most complex sequences: takeoff requires ground acceleration, while landing involves extending the legs for touchdown and deceleration. Draw motion inspiration from videos of modern large birds (albatrosses, pelicans) and bats.
