Dinosaur eggs and nests are core assets for breeding scenes. This tutorial covers egg modeling techniques in ZBrush. Dinosaur eggs vary in shape: spherical (sauropods), oval (theropods), and elongated ovoid (some ornithischians). Start with a Sphere or Ellipsoid primitive, then use the Move brush to adjust it into an asymmetric, natural form—real dinosaur eggs are rarely perfect geometric shapes. Eggshell surfaces feature subtle textures: pore distribution, growth lines, and possible pigment spots. Use Surface Noise to add uniform micro-texture, then paint irregular spots and stripes by hand with the Standard brush. Shell thickness and material quality can be previewed via Polypaint; lighter areas appear thinner and translucent, while darker areas indicate greater thickness. For broken eggs, model crack networks and shard edges. Cracks propagate along stress lines, and shard edges should be thin and sharp. Nests are created by scattering plant materials and soil clumps using Insert Mesh, forming a protective bowl-shaped structure around the eggs. Nest composition reflects the dinosaur's habitat: forest dwellers use leaves and twigs, while riverbank species use mud and aquatic plants. Egg arrangement is also strategic, typically circular or tightly clustered to maximize heat retention. These complete assets can be reused as Kitbash components across various scenes.
