Article Summary

Create an aged dinosaur skin effect in Substance Painter to show the marks of time.

Age is a key dimension in dinosaur character design. This tutorial demonstrates how to create realistic skin aging effects in Substance Painter. Older dinosaurs exhibit reduced elasticity leading to increased sagging and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation forming age spots, worn and thinned scales revealing underlying tissue, and bony protrusions at joints. Start by adding an Age Spots generator on the Base Color layer, using Noise and Curvature to control spot placement and size with colors leaning toward dark brown or grayish-white. Deepened wrinkles are achieved via an additional layer in the Height channel, accentuating groove depth along gravity lines and joint bends. Scale wear concentrates in high-friction areas (soles, belly, mouth); use a Grunge Map to select these regions and reduce the scale layer's opacity. Dry skin is simulated by increasing overall Roughness and decreasing SSS intensity, removing the youthful moisture sheen. Radial wrinkles around eyes and mouth corners should be hand-painted for precision. Nails and horns also show age-related wear: tips become blunted and develop longitudinal cracks. Apply all aging effects as independent Layer Groups, using Opacity sliders to continuously adjust the aging level from juvenile to elderly.
