Article Summary

Render a dinosaur waterfall scene in Blender, combining water dynamics with a spectacular natural landscape.

Category:3D Modeling Technology · Reading time:9 minutes

The waterfall scene blends the dynamic beauty of water with the raw power of dinosaurs. This tutorial details rendering techniques for waterfall scenes in Blender. The main waterfall uses Mantaflow Fluid Simulation, with an Emitter continuously injecting fluid from the cliff edge; set Resolution to at least 200 for a smooth water curtain. Control the water curtain's transparency using Transmission and Volume Absorption in Principled BSDF—greater thickness results in darker colors. Splashing foam is generated via a Secondary Particle System that ejects upward from impact points, combined with a Turbulence Force Field to simulate chaotic bubble movement. Mist is created using Volume Scatter around the water curtain, forming a diffuse white haze that fades with distance. Rainbow effects are achieved using the Spectral node or by adding chromatic aberration post-processing in Compositing, appearing at specific angles between sunlight and mist. A foreground dinosaur stands on rocks beside the waterfall, its skin wet from the mist, resulting in reduced Roughness and enhanced specular highlights. White splashes where water hits rocks are added using a Foam Shader overlaid on the fluid surface. For audio, contrast the low-frequency rumble of the waterfall with the dinosaur's footsteps. To optimize rendering, cache the waterfall simulation to disk and use an Adaptive Domain to reduce unnecessary calculations.
