Article Summary

Add volumetric fog to the dinosaur scene in Blender to create a mysterious prehistoric atmosphere.

Category:3D Modeling Technology · Reading time:8 minutes

Volumetric fog is essential for creating atmosphere in dinosaur scenes. This tutorial details how to implement and optimize volumetric fog in Blender. For basic setup, add a Principled Volume node to the World or a Volume object. Density controls fog thickness, while Anisotropy determines light scattering direction; positive values create forward scattering for god rays. To achieve non-uniform fog, drive Density with a Noise Texture—Scale adjusts the clump size, and Detail adds small-scale turbulence. Ground fog uses a Gradient Texture to limit vertical distribution, paired with a Color Ramp to adjust the falloff curve and simulate thin fog near the surface. God rays appear most distinctly when strong backlight or side light passes through the volume, particularly using Spot Lights with conical beams. Dynamic effects can be created by animating the W component of the Noise Texture for slow movement, or using Geometry Nodes to perturb the fog field in real-time based on dinosaur positions. Regarding performance, volumetric fog is one of the most time-consuming elements in Cycles. We recommend reducing Volume Bounces to 1-2 and using Importance Volume Sampling to accelerate convergence. EEVEE offers lighter alternatives like Volumetric Shadows and Exponential Height Fog. Finally, render a separate Mist Pass in Compositing to flexibly adjust fog intensity and color in post-production without re-rendering.
