Article Summary

Render caustics in water for dinosaurs in Blender to add captivating light and shadow effects to underwater scenes.

Category:3D Modeling Technology · Reading time:8 minutes

Caustics are bright, shimmering light patterns formed on the pool floor when sunlight refracts through water, adding a unique visual appeal to underwater dinosaur scenes. This tutorial explains how to achieve caustic effects in Blender Cycles. First, enable **Refractive Caustics** in the Render Settings. Light type significantly impacts caustic quality: Point and Spot lights produce sharp, defined patterns, while Area lights create soft, diffuse caustics. The water mesh must have sufficient geometric detail or Displacement to generate meaningful refraction; a perfectly flat surface will not produce caustics. Adjust caustic brightness and sharpness using the **Light Caustics** setting and the water's IOR value. For large bodies of water, use the Ocean Modifier to generate realistic waveforms and combine it with an Animated Seed for dynamic caustics. Regarding performance, caustics are among the most expensive effects in path tracing. Use Light Trees and Adaptive Light Sampling to optimize rendering. If render times are prohibitive, consider pre-rendering caustic sequence frames as Emission maps projected onto the seabed for an approximate effect at minimal cost. During compositing, output caustics as a separate Render Layer to easily adjust intensity and color in post-production. Combining caustics with Volumetrics creates spectacular underwater god rays.
