Shipping and Installing a Dinosaur Skeleton Overseas
Planning for a dinosaur skeleton crossing a border: crating, documentation, insurance, port handling, and the installation window that sets the schedule.

Crating is engineering, not packing
A skeleton travels as a series of rigid, fragile elements. Each crate needs internal bracing that matches the bone shape, and each bone needs a marked position in the assembly sequence. Good crating makes installation predictable; poor crating turns it into a puzzle under time pressure.
Documentation decides the timeline
Commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin and any museum loan paperwork all sit on the critical path. For replica material the process is usually simpler than for originals, but customs classification still needs to be agreed before shipping, not after arrival.
Build a buffer into the port
Oversize and unusual cargo can be held for inspection. Plan a realistic buffer between arrival and the installation window. A shipment that lands two days before opening is already late, because port release is not the same as delivery to the gallery.
The installation window is fixed
Museums and venues usually give a narrow access window: floors are finished, other trades are done, and the space must be clear. Work backwards from that window to set shipping dates, and treat every earlier date as a forecast rather than a commitment.
Insurance and condition reports
Photograph and document every element before crating. A condition report protects both sides and makes any claim practical. Confirm what the policy covers in transit, at the port and during installation, because those are three different exposures.
DinoCG ships cast and replica skeletons internationally and plans crating and installation sequencing together, so the schedule survives the port.
