Mounting a Large Dinosaur Skeleton: Armature, Balance and Safety |
How large dinosaur skeletons are mounted safely: armature design, load paths, balance, anchoring and the checks that should happen before a specimen goes up.

The armature is the real structure
Visitors see bones; engineers see a steel frame. The armature carries every load the skeleton cannot carry itself, and its design decides whether the mount is stable for years or drifts out of alignment within months.
Follow the load paths
Each bone transfers load to the next through the armature, not through the fossil or cast. Joints are the critical points, and every connection needs a defined path to the floor or the ceiling anchor. Load paths that wander through a decorative element are a maintenance problem later.
Balance comes before beauty
A mounted skeleton must be stable against a visitor brushing past and against the building itself. Counterweights and base plates are usually hidden, but they decide the visual honesty of the pose. Plan the centre of mass before refining the silhouette.
Anchoring is a building question
Floor load capacity, slab thickness and ceiling structure belong to the venue. The mounting team needs those figures early, not on installation day. Suspended mounts add a second set of engineering questions and often a separate approval process.
Checks before it goes up
Confirm the armature drawings, the connection list, the anchor specification and the assembly sequence. Then confirm the pose against the sightlines visitors will actually use. Most problems caught at this stage cost hours; the same problems after opening cost weeks.
DinoCG coordinates armature engineering with casting and installation, so the frame is designed around the specimen and the venue rather than adjusted on site.
