Article Summary

A practical comparison of original fossils, casts and reconstructions for exhibitions, covering cost, risk, accuracy and what each option can and cannot claim.

Three categories, three different claims

An original fossil is the specimen itself. A cast is a reproduction taken from a specimen or a licensed mould. A reconstruction is an interpretation that fills gaps with inferred anatomy. Each can be excellent, but they support different statements to visitors, insurers and researchers.

Originals: highest value, highest constraint

Originals carry scientific and emotional weight that nothing else matches. They also bring climate control, security, insurance and handling restrictions. Many institutions display originals in protected settings and use casts where visitors pass close or touch.

Casts: the working compromise

A well-made cast preserves surface detail and can be mounted, lit and shipped with far less risk. The quality question is not cast versus original but which mould and which finishing standard. Ask for the source specimen and the mould lineage; a cast of a cast degrades quickly.

Reconstructions: honest interpretation

Reconstructions are necessary where specimens are incomplete. The professional standard is to distinguish observed bone from inferred form, in the object itself or in accompanying interpretation. A reconstruction presented as a faithful specimen is a credibility problem waiting to surface.

How to decide

Start from the visitor experience and the risk tolerance. If close contact, touring or outdoor display is planned, casts and reconstructions usually carry the programme. If scholarly value is the point, protect the original and let the cast do the public work.

DinoCG supplies casts and reconstructions with documented provenance and clearly marked inferred sections, so exhibitions can describe what visitors are actually seeing.
