Article Summary

The production chain behind a museum-grade dinosaur skeleton replica: mold making, casting, finishing, and the choices that distinguish a display piece from a study specimen.

It begins with a reference, not a mould

A replica is only as faithful as its reference. Production starts with measured scans or a licensed cast of the original specimen, plus photographs and published descriptions that fix proportions. Skipping this step produces a skeleton that looks plausible and is anatomically wrong, which museums notice immediately.

Mould making is the hidden cost

Each bone needs a mould that releases cleanly and survives repeated pulls. Large elements are split into sections with registration keys so the seams disappear after assembly. Mould quality decides how much finishing work is needed later, and finishing is where most of the labour sits.

Casting material follows the job

Resin casts hold fine surface detail and suit study or handling collections. Fiberglass is lighter and stronger for large mounted elements, which matters when a skeleton is suspended or travels. Many projects mix the two: resin for teeth and small bones, fiberglass for long limb elements and ribs.

Finishing decides the read

Colour is a decision, not a default. A study cast often keeps a neutral, readable tone, while a display cast may be patinated to suggest age. Either way, the finish should be consistent across bones, because variation between pieces reads as damage rather than character.

Assembly and documentation

The last stage is the one most often skipped: a bone map, an assembly sequence and a record of which elements are replicas. Institutions need that documentation for conservation and for future repair. A good supplier hands it over without being asked.

DinoCG produces skeleton replicas for museum and touring exhibitions, and matches the casting method to whether the piece will be studied, displayed or shipped.
