Standing Tall in the Mall: A Dinosaur Sculpture's Story
A Triceratops sculpture recounts life in a shopping mall atrium, watching children smile and becoming the most popular family photo spot in the city.

They placed me in the center of the grand atrium, where sunlight pours through a glass ceiling and echoes carry the sound of footsteps and laughter. I am a Triceratops, cast in bronze-colored resin, with three horns polished smooth by ten thousand small hands. This shopping mall is my world, and I have come to love every corner of it.
The first week was overwhelming. So many people moved around me in rushing currents, barely glancing in my direction. I worried I had been positioned poorly, that my frill was not impressive enough, that my stance lacked the drama needed to stop busy shoppers in their tracks. Then a toddler broke free from her father's grip and ran straight toward me, arms open wide. She wrapped herself around my front leg and declared, "Mine!" Her father laughed, pulled out his phone, and just like that, I became something more than decoration.
Now I am known as the meeting point. "Meet me at the dinosaur," parents text their teenagers. "Wait by the Triceratops," friends tell each other. I have become a coordinate, a landmark, a place where lost children are found and reunited families celebrate. During holiday seasons, they drape garlands over my horns and nestle gift boxes between my feet. At Halloween, someone always places a tiny witch hat on my head. I wear these decorations with pride.
I have watched generations pass through this atrium. Babies who once sat in strollers now bring their own children to visit me. Teenagers who posed awkwardly beside me return years later with partners, recreating old photographs with self-conscious smiles. The mall staff know me intimately — the janitor who polishes my horns each morning, the security guard who leans against my tail during slow shifts, the barista from the nearby cafe who brings her afternoon coffee and stands beside me for a moment of calm.
Shopping malls can feel impersonal, filled with identical stores and fluorescent efficiency. But I am different. I am the unexpected encounter, the pause in the routine, the reason a child drags a reluctant parent back to the atrium one more time before leaving. I have heard proposals whispered beneath my belly, seen tears wiped away in my shadow, witnessed reunions that made even the busiest passersby stop and smile.
Some nights, after the last shopper leaves and the cleaning crews move through in quiet rhythm, I think about what it means to be a sculpture in a commercial space. I am not art in a gallery, demanding contemplation. I am art in motion, surrounded by the beautiful chaos of everyday life. And I would not trade this noisy, bustling, wonderfully human existence for any museum pedestal in the world.
