Motion quality comes first

Servo drives give precise position control, smooth acceleration and repeatable movement. Pneumatic cylinders are fast and forceful but harder to control finely. If the brief is a slow, believable neck turn, the servo usually wins. If it is a sudden lunge or a heavy jaw snap, air can be the efficient choice.

Maintenance profile differs sharply

Servo systems bring gears, encoders and controllers, and they need periodic inspection rather than constant attention. Pneumatic systems add compressors, filters, moisture traps and seals that wear. Air leaks are common and can be hard to trace, which matters when a technician has to climb inside a sculpture.

Noise is an exhibit issue

Compressors are the loudest part of most pneumatic exhibits and are often the reason an installation needs a plant room. Servo drives are quieter but not silent, and gearbox whine can be audible in a quiet gallery. Neither option is free, so decide which noise the space can tolerate.

Power and environment

Pneumatics need clean, dry air and a stable supply. Servos need electrical capacity and protection from heat and humidity. Outdoor installations favour sealed servo systems when possible, because moisture in an air line is a persistent failure mode.

A common hybrid

Many builds mix the two: servos for controlled, expressive axes and pneumatics for fast, high-force actions. The right answer is per joint, not per dinosaur. Ask the supplier to justify each axis rather than applying one technology everywhere.

DinoCG engineers drive systems joint by joint, choosing servo or air against the motion, maintenance and environmental requirements of the venue.
