Article Summary

Dreadnoughtus was once thought to be the longest dinosaur, but later research suggests it may be a species of Brachiosaurus.

Category:Dinosaur Facts · Reading time:7 min

Seismosaurus, a sauropod from Late Jurassic North America, was initially estimated to reach over 40 meters in length, making it the longest known dinosaur. However, detailed subsequent research suggests Seismosaurus may be a large species of Diplodocus (Diplodocus hallorum) rather than a distinct genus. Even after revision, Seismosaurus remains one of the largest diplodocids, with an estimated length of approximately 30–33 meters. Fossils discovered in the Morrison Formation of New Mexico include partial vertebrae, pelvic bones, and hindlimb elements. The story of Seismosaurus reminds us that paleontology is a constantly evolving field, where new discoveries and analyses frequently reshape our understanding of dinosaurs.
