Scelidosaurus: A primitive ankylosaur from the Jurassic

Scelidosaurus, a basal ankylosaur from the Early Jurassic of England, reached lengths of approximately 4 meters. As one of the earliest described ankylosaurs, it showcases the early form of armored dinosaurs. Its body was covered with neatly arranged bony plates, though these were smaller and simpler than those of later ankylosaurs. Scelidosaurus lacked a tail club and extreme body width, retaining more primitive proportions. Fossils discovered in coastal cliffs of Dorset, England, include several nearly complete skeletons. As a basal member on the ankylosaur evolutionary tree, Scelidosaurus is crucial for understanding the origins and early evolution of armored dinosaurs.
