Article Summary

Saltasaurus was a Late Cretaceous titanosaur from Argentina, armored with bony plates.

Category:Dinosaur Facts · Reading time:7 min

Saltasaurus, a Late Cretaceous titanosaurian sauropod from Argentina, measured approximately 12 meters in length. It was the first sauropod confirmed to possess bony osteoderms, fundamentally changing our understanding of their defensive capabilities. Its skin embedded numerous pea-sized osteoderms and larger bony nodules, forming a natural armor likely evolved as an adaptation to increasing predation pressure. Saltasaurus had a relatively small size, a trend common among Late Cretaceous titanosaurs. Fossils discovered in Salta Province, Argentina, include multiple individuals and nesting sites.
