Rugops is an abelisaurid dinosaur from mid-Cretaceous Africa, measuring approximately 9 meters in length. Its name means "wrinkled face," referring to the distinctive bony ridges and grooves on its snout and skull roof. These ornamental structures likely supported vibrant keratinous coverings that served as visual signals during mating displays or territorial disputes. With a relatively short skull and blade-like teeth that were not exceptionally large, Rugops was probably not an active predator of large prey but rather an opportunistic scavenger or hunter of smaller to medium-sized animals. The discovery of Rugops has helped scientists better understand the diversity and evolutionary history of abelisaurids in Africa.
