Rigging a Life-Size Dinosaur: What Buyers Should Ask Before Production |
A practical checklist for rigging a large dinosaur model for film, real-time exhibits and animated content, from joint hierarchy to deformation quality.

The rig follows the use case
A rig built for a film shot and a rig built for a real-time exhibit are not the same object. Film work tolerates heavy controls and dense deformation because frames are rendered offline. Real-time exhibits need light skeletons, predictable frame cost and a limited control set that an operator can drive without a technical artist on site.
Start from the joint hierarchy, not the controls
The joint hierarchy is the contract between model and animation. Ask for a written list of joints, their parent relationships and which of them are driven by the animation system versus by hand. A clean hierarchy makes later changes cheap; a messy one makes every retarget expensive.
Deformation is where realism is won or lost
Large creatures fail at the neck, the hips and the base of the tail, where skin stretches over big ranges of motion. Check those areas at extreme poses rather than at rest. Weight the model, test it, and inspect the silhouette from the angles the audience will actually see.
Deliver both the rig and the documentation
A rig without documentation is a black box. A useful delivery includes a control sheet, naming conventions, unit and axis settings, and a short note on known limits. If the client will retarget animation, confirm that the skeleton follows a known convention before production starts.
Questions worth asking early
Which engine or software will consume the rig? How many animation clips are expected? Will a performer drive it in real time? Does it need to match an existing skeleton? Answers to these four questions usually decide the rigging budget more than the polygon count does.
DinoCG prepares rigs for museum, theme-park and film projects, and matches the rig to the delivery platform rather than defaulting to a single template.
