Article Summary

Nodosaurus is the type genus of Nodosauridae; it lacks a tail club but has its body covered in dense bony nodules.

Category:Dinosaur Facts · Reading time:6 min

Nodosaurus, a nodosaurid dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of North America, reached lengths of about 5 meters. As the type genus of Nodosauridae, it represents a major branch of ankylosaurs that lacked a tail club. Its body was covered in dense bony nodules and small plates, forming flexible armor. Compared to Ankylosauridae, nodosaurids prioritized flexibility over absolute protection. Fossils found in Wyoming's Cloverly Formation consist only of postcranial bones. Despite being incomplete, Nodosaurus serves as the namesake for its family and is crucial for understanding ankylosaur classification and evolution.
