Article Summary

How motion, distance, and sound sensors bring animatronic dinosaurs to life—and how to configure safe response behaviors for large visitor groups.

Sensors define the trigger, not the experience

Motion, distance and sound sensors decide when a dinosaur reacts. The experience comes from how it reacts: the delay, the intensity and the recovery. A well-tuned two-second response feels alive; a badly tuned one feels like a vending machine.

Pick sensor types by the space

Passive infrared detects body heat and works well for a clear approach path. Ultrasonic and time-of-flight measure distance and suit zones. Pressure mats are reliable but wear. Microphones are simple and can misfire in noisy halls. Outdoor spaces add sunlight and rain to the list of things that confuse sensors.

Response design is safety design

A large animatronic that lunges toward a crowd needs a defined reaction zone and a defined stop. Set the maximum forward travel away from the visitor path, and make the reset predictable. Children approach faster than adults expect, so the safe zone should be larger than the visual one.

Reduce false triggers

Multiple sensors with a shared decision rule beat a single sensitive sensor. Require two conditions before a full response, and use a quieter idle animation for ambiguous cases. This keeps the exhibit lively without firing at every passing shadow.

Visibility of control

Staff need a way to pause, mute or reset the unit without opening it. A simple control panel and a clear status indicator save time on busy days and prevent improvisation during a fault.

DinoCG designs interaction behaviour together with mechanism and safety limits, so the exhibit reacts convincingly without surprising the people closest to it.
