Category:Dinosaur Facts · Reading time:6 min

Elaphrosaurus is a Late Jurassic theropod dinosaur from Tanzania, measuring approximately 6 meters in length. Its name means "light lizard," reflecting its unusually lightweight skeletal structure. The classification of Elaphrosaurus has long been debated; it has been placed within Ceratosauria, Coelurosauria, and even Ornithischia. Recent studies suggest it may occupy a basal position within Ceratosauria or represent an early branch of Abelisauroidea. Elaphrosaurus had unique limb proportions with relatively short hind limbs, suggesting it was not particularly fast. Fossils were discovered in the Doushantuo Formation of Tanzania, one of Africa's most significant Jurassic dinosaur sites.
