GIS Analysis of Dinosaur Migration Routes
Do dinosaurs migrate? Reconstruct ancient animal migration routes and habitat preferences using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Seasonal migration in modern large mammals is a spectacular natural phenomenon. Did dinosaurs exhibit similar migratory behavior? GIS (Geographic Information System) analysis provides a quantitative research tool to transform scattered fossil discovery sites into continuous migration routes and habitat maps.
Data integration is the foundation of GIS analysis. Collect all fossil occurrence records for the target species worldwide, including latitude/longitude, stratigraphic age, and depositional environment. Data sources include the Paleobiology Database, GeoNames, and national geological survey databases. Clean the data by removing records with incorrect coordinates or uncertain ages to produce a reliable spatiotemporal distribution dataset.
Habitat suitability modeling employs MaxEnt or Random Forest algorithms. Fossil occurrence points are overlaid with paleoclimate, paleotopography, and paleovegetation reconstruction layers to train the model in identifying environmental conditions preferred by the species. The model outputs a continuous probability surface, where high-probability areas represent potential habitats. Comparing models across different geological periods enables tracking of spatiotemporal habitat shifts.
Inferring migration routes by integrating habitat models with paleogeographic reconstructions. When two distant habitats were both suitable for habitation during the same period, the connecting path between them represents a potential migration corridor. Oxygen isotope analysis provides independent validation: oxygen isotope ratios in tooth enamel reflect water sources available to an individual during its lifetime; isotopic differences across locations suggest movement. Cross-validation of GIS data with geochemical evidence strengthens the reliability of these conclusions. Studies indicate that certain hadrosaurs and ceratopsians indeed exhibited seasonal migration behaviors, with routes closely aligned with ancient coastlines and river systems.
