Commercial Licensing Strategy for Dinosaur IP
How to Turn a Dinosaur IP into a Sustainable Revenue Stream: Licensing Models, Pricing Strategies, and Partner Selection.
Category:Industry Solutions · Reading time:10 minutes
Commercial licensing of a dinosaur IP is the core pathway to converting creative value into economic returns. A mature dinosaur IP can achieve diversified monetization through four models: product licensing, digital content licensing, experiential space licensing, and brand collaborations. However, licensing goes beyond simply selling logo usage rights; it requires systematic strategic management.
The licensing model depends on the IP's development stage. In the startup phase, focus on self-operated products to validate market demand and gather consumer insights. During the growth phase, expand into non-core categories such as stationery, food, and daily necessities to increase visibility. In the mature phase, extend to premium categories and overseas licensing to enhance brand value. Spatial experience licensing (themed exhibitions, mall installations) is a key strength of the Dinosaur IP, with single licensing fees reaching hundreds of thousands of yuan.
The pricing strategy adopts a hybrid model combining an advance royalty and a revenue share. The advance guarantees the IP holder's baseline earnings, typically ranging from 3% to 5% of estimated retail sales. The revenue share is calculated at 5% to 10% of actual sales, incentivizing both parties to grow the market together. For top-tier IPs, the share rate can reach 12% to 15%. Contract terms usually span 2 to 3 years, with renewal conditions and performance milestones included.
Partner selection is critical to successful licensing. Evaluate candidates based on brand alignment, channel reach, product development capabilities, and compliance history. Prioritize partners with established supply chains and sales networks in your target categories. Conduct site visits and background checks before signing; perform regular audits of product quality and sales data afterward. The core of licensing management is quality control—any substandard licensed product can damage the IP's brand value. Implement strict approval processes and random inspection systems; it is better to limit licenses than to over-license.
