Category:Dinosaur Facts · Reading time:7 min

Austroraptor is a large dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Argentina, measuring approximately 5 meters in length. It is one of the largest known dromaeosaurs from South America and represents the most complete dromaeosaurid fossil discovered on the continent. With its low, elongated skull—distinct from the short, tall skulls of other dromaeosaurs—Austroraptor displays unique adaptations. Although its forelimbs were relatively short, it retained the characteristic sickle claw typical of the group. The discovery of Austroraptor indicates that dromaeosaurs underwent independent adaptive radiation in South America, evolving morphological traits different from their Northern Hemisphere relatives. This finding significantly enhances our understanding of the global diversity within Dromaeosauridae.
